Physiotherapy

Animals can’t tell us where their pain is, or if they have injured themselves, and they are often good at hiding their discomfort. ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapists have completed degrees in human physiotherapy and worked in human practice before completing post graduate education and further qualification to work with animals. The experience gained in the human field develops skills which are transferable to veterinary physiotherapy. Their experience and specialities are diverse and therefore treatment programmes will be highly specialised.

Physiotherapy at Greyfriars

The purpose of physiotherapy is to restore and maintain mobility, function, independence and performance. Physiotherapy can ease the pain of dogs and cats with a range of problems including arthritis, sprains, strains and back pain. Physiotherapy can help treat dogs with performance problems as well as post-operative rehabilitation. Any patient, from ageing pets to elite canine athletes, can benefit from appropriate physiotherapy treatment.

ACPAT Chartered physiotherapists will use a detailed assessment to tailor treatments to each animal’s condition and the stage of the problem. A variety of soft tissue techniques (e.g. massage and stretches), joint techniques and electrotherapy treatments (e.g. LASER, ultrasound, NMES, TENS) are incorporated into veterinary physiotherapy treatments as appropriate. Your veterinary physiotherapist can also provide handling, posture and exercise advice. Veterinary physiotherapists can also advise education about your pets conditions such as OA, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, patella luxation, and offer home management suggestions.

Exercise rehabilitation and functional rehabilitation are an important aspect of veterinary physiotherapy and our physiotherapists work together with our Pain Specialist, Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioners and Registered Canine Hydrotherapists to ensure every patient gets optimal care and treatment at Greyfriars, helping to ensure the best possible recovery and outcomes.
